Spatial Variability of Radon Production Rates in an Alluvial Aquifer Affects Travel Time Estimates of Groundwater Originating From a Losing Stream

چکیده

Assessing water travel times in hyporheic and adjacent alluvial sediments is important to quantify exchange rates, biogeochemical turnover, pollution dynamics across groundwater-surface interfaces floodplain aquifers. Heat 222Rn are useful natural tracers for this purpose. While heat transport commonly simulated via the convection-conduction equation, of often assuming purely advective a homogenous distribution production rates model domain. In present study, we explicitly production, transport, radioactive decay after surface infiltration into an aquifer with numerical models MODFLOW-NWT MT3D-USGS. Using field observations, modeling, laboratory experiments, show that vary substantially lowland river. Distributions mean river-to-groundwater time aquifer, estimated Bayesian approach, shifted considerably depending on whether series groundwater heads temperature were jointly inverted allowed spatially. With distance river, differences between median apparent ages increased by factors ranging from 1.4 at 4 m 11.9 59 m, finding highlights need simulate explicitly. The joint inversion 222Rn, heads, reduced uncertainty associated times, suggesting introduced spatially varying can least partly be compensated using combination tracers.

Seasonal behaviour of spatial variability of groundwater level in a granitic aquifer in monsoon climate

Groundwater flow in a small watershed in a hard rock region of Andhra Pradesh, India mainly exists in a coupled system of weathered and fractured rock aquifers. However, due to heavy extraction, groundwater level has declined and the weathered part has become unsaturated. In general, the water-table aquifer exists in the area under semi-confined or unconfined conditions. Monthly water-levels fr...

Quantification of Groundwater Recharge from an Ephemeral Stream into a Mountainous Karst Aquifer

Sustainable groundwater production from karst aquifers is primarily dictated by its recharge rate. Therefore, it is essential to accurately quantify annual groundwater recharge in order to limit overexploitation and to evaluate artificial methods for groundwater enrichment. Infiltration during erratic flood events in karst basins may substantially contribute to aquifer recharge. However, the co...

Distribution and variability of redox zones controlling spatial variability of arsenic in the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer, southeastern Arkansas.

Twenty one of 118 irrigation water wells in the shallow (25-30 m thick) Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer in the Bayou Bartholomew watershed, southeastern Arkansas had arsenic (As) concentrations (<0.5 to 77 microg/L) exceeding 10 microg/L. Sediment and groundwater samples were collected and analyzed from the sites of the highest, median, and lowest concentrations of As in groundwater i...
